Zoonoses and red meat processing

Primary tabs

Within the red meat industry, zoonotic diseases do not only pose a health risk to the consumer, but also to all those who are employed along the food value chain including workers in the feedlots, lorry drivers, animal health inspectors and butchers. Macro- and micro- economies can be affected due to shortages such as those resulting from the abortion storms in sheep during a Rift Valley fever epidemic. Certain zoonotic diseases transmitted during red meat and game processing can also severely constrain international trade in meat products. There is also a socioeconomic knock-on effect from media induced panic such as that caused by the “Mad Cow Disease” outbreaks. It should be noted that game meat is included under red meat processing.
